The traditional Bulgarian alcoholic beverage is rakia.<\/em> It is most commonly made of fermented grapes and has a high alcohol content varying anywhere between 40% and 95% alc. Once a foreigner has tasted this demonic beverage, his life will never be the same. (Some even claim that there is no life after rakia!)<\/p>\n

The legal drinking age in Bulgaria is 18, but nobody actually waits till that mature age to start drinking. And nobody tries to prevent them from doing so, either. You can be nine and still buy a six-pack from the nearest\u00a0 liquor store at three in the morning. The salesman can even treat you a cigarette if he finds you cute.<\/p>\n

In Bulgaria, you can enjoy the ultimate extreme experience – drinking and driving, as the possibility of a police officer who is drunk himself to stop you on the road is quite high.<\/p>\n

The Bulgarians have announced one-third of\u00a0 all the 365 days in the year to be official or nearly official national and religious holidays as an excuse to leave work earlier (or not work at all), so that they could dedicate their full attention to drinking.<\/p>\n

A foreigner should be warned in advance that in Bulgaria some popular internationally recognized phrases differ in terms of time span. For example, the so-called \u201elong weekend\u201c in Bulgaria may begin on Tuesday, and in bars, the \u201chappy hour\u201d can be any hour.<\/p>\n

\u041en the internet, you can buy a Barbie doll for 25-30 Euros. In Bulgaria, for that price you can get a full-grown Barbie holding a bottle of whisky in each hand.<\/p>\n
